Ngayong Agosto ay ang Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa. Ang mga kaguruan ng Paaralang Elementarya ng Mambog ay buong siglang nakiissa sa nasabing pagdiriwang,
Bake Fest 2016
It was an incredibly fun day for the teachers,
pupils, and parents of Mambog Elementary School last Friday, August 12, 2016.
At exactly one o’clock in the afternoon that day, the owner and staff of Quim’s
Cake Bakeshop and Café arrived at our school to share their talents and skills
in baking. The generous people from the said bakeshop conquered the heavy
traffic and flooded streets from Tomas Morato, Quezon City just to get to our
school. They did not only provide hands-on experiences and activities to our
pupils; they also gave free cake!
The
event was hosted by Mrs. Elleden Grace L. Denosta, Kindergarten Teacher of MES.
The pupils who joined the event were thirty pupils selected across levels. The
program began with a short prayer led by Mrs. Joylyn S. Manejable, Kindergarten
Teacher of MES. It was followed by a welcome remarks given by Mrs. Raquel I.
Blones, Principal II of MES. Afterwards, Chef Eliaquim Labang, owner of Quim’s
Cake Bakeshop and Café gave an inspirational message. He discussed the history
of his success but more importantly, he stressed how our pupils should never
stop chasing their dreams.
Subsequently, the baking activities commenced.
The pupils were divided into four groups which are each composed of pupils
across levels. Older pupils were grouped with younger ones. Each group were
assigned with a chef and a teacher to assist the pupils. For group 1, Chef
Jhollow Ignacio and Mrs. Revilyn B. Dumon, Grade 1 Teacher, were assigned while
for group 2, Chef Mark Anthony Sol and Mrs. Vilma F. Mata, Grade 1 Teacher were
assigned. For group 3, Chef Jhorgialyn Corpuz and Mrs. Elleden Grace L. Denosta
were assigned while for group 4 Chef Jack Ignacio and Mrs. Hazel F. Famaran
were assigned. Chef Eliaquim supervised all the groups while Mr. Anthony Haber,
managing director of the bakeshop, laid out the step by step instructions for each
baking activity.
The pupils accomplished two recipes: Chocolate
Chip Cookies and Lengua de Gato. They enjoyed every bit of moment during their
baking activities. It was truly an amazing learning activity for them as they
were able to experience mixing flour, rolling dough, and molding cookies. The
excitement would also be easily seen on their eyes as they anticipated the
finished product. The teachers who overlooked the activity also learned a lot
while the parents were ecstatic upon seeing their children doing stuff by
themselves.
While waiting for the cookies to be ready, the
owner and staff of Quim’s Cake Bakeshop and Café were awarded with their
certificate of recognition and tokens of appreciation. It was then followed by
a closing remarks given by Mrs. Evangeline A. Rosales, Chairman of
Kindergarten. Yet, the event does not end there! Chef Eliaquim himself awarded
the school with two whole cakes and plentiful slices of cake for the teachers
and staff of Mambog Elementary School.
All
in all, it was a great day for both MES Family and our visitors. We are very
thankful for the owner and staff of Quim’s Cake Bakeshop and Café for visiting
our school and sharing their expertise with us. One feature of the K to 12
Curriculum is to prepare the youth for future career opportunities. We often
integrate that in our lessons by using child-centered approaches as proposed by
Progressivist educational philosophers. We are very blessed to have experts
like them visiting our school. The partnership of our school with them proves
how important it is for community stakeholders to be actively engaged and
responsible with the quality education of 21st century learners. A
toast for a successful activity that was held and to more successful activities
to be held in the future!
At
last, the cookies are done! Chefs and teachers per group distributed the
cookies equally to the pupils. It was a great joy seeing how proud the pupils
are of themselves after seeing the fruits of their labor. They were all happy
while munching the cookies that they made. Some were also shared with their
parents.
One Meralco Foundation Roadshow
It was a fine morning
last Saturday, July 16, 2016. The City Schools Division of Bacoor was ready to
blaze the trails again that day as representatives assigned by Dr. Helen A.
Gutierrez, Educational Program Supervisor for Science, Research, and YES-O attended
One Meralco Foundation’s Energy Education Roadshow. The event was held at Lopez
Building, Meralco Compound, Ortigas Center, Pasig City. The said
representatives were Mrs. Raquel I. Blones, Principal II of Mambog Elementary
School, Mrs. Welmina Akol, Teacher III of Bacoor National High School—Tabing
Dagat, and Ms. Levin R. Pabriaga, Teacher I of Mambog Elementary School.
Registration for the program began at
8:00. The program proper started by 9:00. Ms. Eddielyn Addun, Program Manager
of One Meralco Compound gave the Opening Remarks and Rationale of the Program.
One Meralco Foundation (OMF) is the corporate foundation and social development
arm of the Manila Electric Company (MERALCO), the largest electric utility
company in the Philippines. Formerly named Meralco Millennium Foundation, Inc.,
the foundation was re-launched as One Meralco Foundation, Inc. in 2011 and
aligned its core advocacies to the corporate goals of the mother company. OMF
is a donee institution accredited by the Philippine Council of NGO
Certification, a registered social welfare and development agency under the
Department of Social Welfare and Development, and a member of the Philippine
Business for Social Progress, Philippine Business for the Environment and the
League of Corporate Foundations.* Ms. Addun also acknowledged the participants
from National Capital Region and Region IV-A CALABARZON by a roll call.
The first speaker for the event was Mr. Danilo
Aquillo, Energy Solutions Specialist and Team Leader of Meralco. He discussed
about Implementing and Sustaining Energy Efficiency in Schools.** According to
Mr. Aquillo, Energy efficiency is being able to minimize the use of electricity
without compromising the comfort or convenience of the users. He gave tips on
how to promote energy efficiency in schools and at home. His discussion was
concluded by an open forum led by himself and Mr. Edelbert Calderon, Energy
Solutions Engineer in Meralco. Through the open forum, teachers and
administrators were able to ask questions specified for their respective
divisions.
The second batch of speakers were Mrs. Mona Dela
Cruz of Fortune Elementary School and Mr. Michael D. Morella of Pinagbuhatan
High School. These teachers were the leaders for One Meralco Foundation and
Coalition of Better Education’s (CBE)* Energy Flash Cards Project which
commenced last 2011. Both speakers talked about Integrating Energy Education in
Schools using the OMF Flash Cards.** The idea of creating Energy Flash Cards
arose during the anticipated eruption of Mayon Volcano in 2011. With the vast
number of learners who will not be able to go to school because of the
impending disaster, Bro. Armin Luistro, former DepEd Secretary, collaborated
with Coalition for Better Education to create instructional materials which may
used by pupils even outside the four walls of the classroom. Aside from the
benefits of using the OMF Flash Cards, the speakers also shared their
experiences while making the flash cards. Their discussion was lively and
interesting. With their candor and wit, all the participants of the event were
motivated and at the same time excited to create their own OMF Flash cards. A
fulfilling meal followed the discussion of the two speakers.
After the lunch break, the participants were
energized by a short and fun exercise projected on screen. Afterwards, Ms.
Luchi Flores, Executive Director of Coalition for Better Education (CBE)
discussed how to develop customized energy flashcards. Once declaring
commitment, the teacher participants of the event will customize energy flash
cards which when chosen, will be recognized as part of the Best Energy
Education Practice in the Education Summit on April 2017. The exact dates and
venue of the summit were not announced. The sound of awards and recognition are
sweet to the ears but committing on creating the energy flash cards comes with
strict requirements and strong focus. Teachers will form a team with a minimum
of five members from preferably the same school but from different subject
areas (English, Mathematics, Science, Araling Panlipunan/ Filipino,
TLE/MAPEH,EPP. Yet, teachers from other schools willing to participate may also
join. The team members must collaborate with each other face to face or online
for at least four (4) times a week. The energy flash cards are somehow similar
to the Science Intervention Material (SIM). Like the SIM, the energy flash
cards may be used for students not regularly attending the school because of
socio-economic factors. It may also be used for pupils performing below the
average level. The energy flash cards are categorized as the KNOW/ KNOWLEDGE
cards (coded green), DO/ ACTIVITY cards (coded blue), and the PROJECT-BASED
LEARNING (PBL) cards (coded red). The cards should be aligned with Department
of Education’s Curriculum Standards, Next Generation’s Science Standards***,
and Partners for 21st Century Learning Standards.**** The cards will
undergo evaluation by experts and peers. It must also consider text
readability, originality, and the integration of UNESCO’s four pillars of
education namely learning to know, learning to do, learning to be, and learning
to live together. When creating the cards, especially the PBL cards, the
Backward Design must be highly considered. The Backward Design starts with the
end in mind, thus setting the learning goals that must be attained before
planning lesson content and designing instructional experiences.
The parts of the cards were also discussed. Much
emphasis was given to the PBL cards as it is the hardest category among the
three. The problems and activities in the PBL cards must be authentic, logical,
based on real life situations, integrated with other subject areas, and has a
powerful touch of value processing.
To be able to join the Educational Summit
mentioned earlier, teacher participants must be involved with Communities in
Practice. This includes the Card Wiz, HOT Cards, and Cards in Action. Card Wiz
encompasses the creation of cards which was discussed earlier in this report.
This may be done by three teachers. On the other hand, HOT Cards, is the
implementation of the Energy PBL Card. This may be done by one teacher. Lastly,
Cards in Action is conducting an action research in the use of the cards. All
these three components of Communities in Practice must be verified and
validated by the lead campers of Energy Education, the school principal, and other
experts in the field. To make this possible, the lead campers will hand out the
Energy Kit to schools in September. The Energy Kit is composed of the
Knowledge, Activity, and Project-Based Learning Cards. It also includes a
teacher’s guide and a student’s guide. All the materials are written in English
as certain terms have no equivalent yet in the Mother Tongue.
The last speaker for
the event was Dr. Jestoni P. Babia, Dean of the College of Education in the
University of San Jose Recoletos in Cebu. He started with another fun energizer
in a game-like form. Afterwards, he discussed about the Strategies in Teaching
Energy Concepts and Developing Flash Cards for Classroom Use: Art of
Questioning, Project-Based Learning Approaches, Outcome-Based Activities and
ICT Integration in the Classroom. Dr. Babia exposed his listeners about the sad
truths that teachers may encounter inside the classroom. However, these challenges
may be won over through careful planning of the lesson, creative questioning,
and in the integration of PBL and ICT in the teaching and learning process. An
effective lesson must utilize the principles of Constructivism, wherein
teachers only facilitate learning and students create meaning for themselves.
For so long, our country produces graduates with skills mismatched to what is
needed in the industry. With the emergence of the ASEAN Integration in 2015,
our curriculum now aims to prepare students for future career opportunities.
PBL may help in this process as it involves simulated adult work roles in its
activities. In PBL, students answer the higher order “Why” and “How” questions
and not only the lower order “What”, “Where”, “Who”, “When”, and “Which”
questions. PBL also provides a venue to develop the 21st century
skills namely Communication, Critical Thinking, Creativity, and Collaboration.
PBL gives flexible activities which are task-oriented, student-centered, and
experiential.
After discussing these topics, Dr. Babia
demonstrated how to use the energy cards. Afterwards, a mini-contest was held
by asking volunteers from the teacher participants to also demonstrate how to
use the energy cards. There were five volunteers selected for the demonstration
of the KNOWLEDGE cards, three volunteers for the ACTIVITY cards, and one
volunteer for the PROJECT-BASED LEARNING cards. Among the three volunteers for
the ACTIVITY cards were Mrs. Welmina Akol from Bacoor National High
school—Tabing Dagat and Ms. Levin R. Pabriaga from Mambog Elementary School.
After all the presentations, winners were declared for each category.
Amazingly, Ms. Levin R. Pabriaga won for the category of ACTIVITY cards
demonstration.
After the
mini-contest, Dr. Babia processed the demonstrations and gave more tips to
teachers on how to avoid unnecessary answers and comments given by the pupils.
He concluded his discussion by giving two inspirational quotes:
In an effective classroom, students should not
only know WHAT they are doing,
they should also know WHY, and HOW.
-Henry Wong
Most people say that it is INTELLECT that makes a
great scientist;
They are wrong;
It is CHARACTER.
-Albert Einstein
The event was
concluded by a heartwarming message by Mr. Jeffrey O. Tarayao, President and
Chief CSR Officer of MERALCO. He gave the future directions of the One Meralco
Foundation and thanked public school teachers for our dedication and commitment
to service.
It was truly a memorable day for
Team Bacoor City. It is such a wonderful feeling to witness the day to day
progress of our students. With the new opportunity given by One Meralco
Foundation (OMF) and Coalition for Better Education (CBE), we are challenged but
extremely motivated to create instructional materials that will shape our young
minds into the future leaders of our society. We would also like to thank Dr.
Helen A. Gutierrez for being a wonderful leader who supports the growth of
teachers. With the end of this report, we pledge ourselves to DepEd—Bacoor
City, OMF, CBE, and to our most valued customers—our students.
